Hazel at Home

Here's what it costs, before anyone calls you

Help at home runs about $35 an hour in most of the areas we cover. Nobody else publishes a number. We think you should have one before you pick up the phone.

What a month actually looks like

Your parent's ZIP code decides where you land within that range, which is why the quiz asks for it.

Two mornings a week4 hoursabout $607 a month
Three hours every dayMost families21 hoursabout $3,185 a month
Assisted livingFull-timeabout $6,200 a month

Most families start with three hours every day and adjust from there.

What changes the price

Overnight care

Someone awake or on call through the night usually costs more per hour, or is charged as a flat overnight rate.

Weekends and holidays

Many providers charge a little more for Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Dementia and memory care

Help for a parent with dementia may need a caregiver with extra training, which can raise the hourly rate.

Short shifts

Visits under the provider's minimum (often two to four hours) can carry a higher hourly rate, or may not be offered.

How billing works

You pay the provider directly for the hours your parent receives. Hazel never bills you and never takes a cut of what you pay.

  • Most providers bill weekly or every two weeks, for the hours actually worked.
  • You'll see the matched provider's real hourly rate before they call you.
  • Ask on the call about minimum hours, cancellation notice and any extra charges, so nothing surprises you.

Hazel itself is paid by the provider, not by you. Here's exactly how.

Help at home vs. assisted living

The national average for assisted living is about $6,200 a month. Even three hours of help every day at home , about $3,185 a month, comes in at around half that, and your mom stays in her own home, with her own routines, her own neighbors and her own kitchen.

There are times a facility is the right call, and nothing here is meant to talk you out of that. But many families move to assisted living because they didn't know a few hours a week at home was an option. It is.

Figures are typical averages for the areas Hazel covers and national averages for assisted living. Your parent's exact rate depends on their ZIP code and the provider.
